British Airways is to start offering purchase before flight meals in economy class both domestically and around Europe. The airline’s Euro Traveller (short haul economy) meals are to partnered with British Michelin-starred chef, Tom Kerridge, who has designed a number of gourmet food items, including signature pies and sandwiches.

British Airways brand new 'Buy Before you Fly' menu is offer for short-haul economy food, and can only be pre-purchased via the British Airways inflight retail High Life shop website. There will be no food on board; instead economy passengers will receive complimentary water and a snack, such as a breakfast bar of crisps, a move that started at the beginning of the pandemic.

Speedbird Cafe will launch as a pre-order proposition, which will allow customers to customise their journey by purchasing food, drink and inflight retail items up to 12 hours before the flight: that's quite a gap, and there will be no chance to order extra items before you fly, meaning passengers will need to guess how hungry they are.

There has been speculation the change is likely to mean that there will some return to complementary catering after the pandemic, and it is likely food will be available to purchase on board when passenger numbers return to a more normal level.

The main meals on offer from Tom Kerridge's range of items will include British classics such as Warm Steak & Ale Pie; Ham Hock & Smoked Cheddar Sandwiches; a Spiced Cauliflower Tortilla Wrap; Chicken, Bacon and Celery Brioche; and a Brie Ploughman's Sandwich.

"Over the last few months we know that our customers have valued the complimentary refreshments offered, so they're here to stay," says Carolina Martinoli, British Airways' Director of Brand and Customer Experience. "But in addition, we also wanted to offer more choice and the ability to buy something more substantial. After a successful partnership with M&S, we have teamed up with another British favourite, chef Tom Kerridge."
