Stunning new Washington American Admirals Club Lounge
The spectacular new Washington American Admirals Club Lounge in the US capital includes seats for up to 236 people, a massive fireplace, a VIP area, a bar, and a buffet.
There are references to Washington, DC all over the lounge, such as cherry blossoms and a picture of George Washington. Many of the seats have a suitcase-inspired design.
Found on the upper level near Gate E47, the new lounge is nearly 14,500 square in size (1,350sqm) and is the biggest at the airport and an improvement over earlier iterations of the Admirals Club.
Visitors ascend a stone staircase to reach the 236-seat lounge, which pays homage to locations like the National Archives and the Washington Monument and truly reflects the DC area. Passengers can also use a lift that has a stunning cherry blossom background.
Some of these health designs have noise-cancelling acoustics and customised mood lighting that changes dependent on the time of day.
Inside the Club, a sizable reception space with a check-in counter and a lovely wood backdrop welcomes visitors.
American Airlines says it expects customers will feel cosy and at home in the lounge thanks to the soothing colours and friendly rustic vibe.
Inside the Club, elite passengers will find a number of sizable rooms, each with distinctive features and opulent amenities. One consists of a sizable eating area with a bar, a sizable buffet, numerous tables, some of which can be merged to seat many people, or smaller ones for families and couples, as well as a row of booths for extra privacy when working or dining.
Jonathan Yip, American Airlines's senior manager for ground and lounge products, says the airline created a new vision for the Club because people have different priorities for travel post-pandemic. "What we've seen is people prioritise wellness," he said. "So, we've brought in new ideas to create this new, different sense of place, allowing guests to relax not just through the meal offerings but throughout the entire design."
The reimagined design enhances the luxury of the space to make passengers feel like they're at home, according to American Airlines.
It is a new style of lounge, of which three more of which are being built in Austin, Newark, and Denver, which will have different designs to signify which city they are in. For example, the DC Club has images of historic figures on the walls, and hanging lamps that read part of President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, plus murals depicting national monuments, among other location-specific touches.
The Club stands out from other carrier lounges thanks to all the small details, such as American's distinctive logo and DC landmarks. Interesting flourishes are a wood ceiling with hanging lamps in the shape of balls and the room's soothing use of brown and grey. American claims that the use of natural materials is meant to offer visitors a sensation of being outside and to add to the "healing" ambiance.
The lounge has a second, sizable area that is almost like a living room, complete with a big fireplace, couches all around it, various seating arrangements like elevated recliners with side tables that are modelled after the Martin Luther King Jr. monument, and a wood ceiling with a calming chandelier.
The fireplace is surrounded by dividers that separate the room into different living spaces, all of which retain a homey atmosphere.
An abstract map of Washington, DC, is shown on the carpet, and cherry blossoms, with hues of blue for American's colour scheme, according to American Airlines.
One of the rooms has giant spherical loungers that look out onto the ramp.
Other areas of the Club include a VIP room for dignitaries or government lawmakers flying on American, which was modelled after the Liberty of Congress. Conveniently situated behind the check-in counter is the VIP room. There are also spacious bathrooms with earthy hues that have a cottage-like atmosphere as opposed to an airport lounge.
For even greater seclusion, the bathroom doors connect from the ceiling to the floor, in a European style, which is very rare at a US Airport.
